Workshop 'Community of practice for evidence syntheses on gender-based violence: learning together to enable methodological developments and improve evidence for policy and practice'

Year: 2025
Type: conference-paper
Abstract: This workshop is aimed at researchers, practitioners, policy makers and people with lived experience of violence and abuse who are involved in conducting and/or using evidence syntheses of any design (e.g., systematic review, policy review). We will use participatory methods to foster open dialog, networking, and mobilising knowledge on methodological challenges associated with evidence syntheses on gender-based violence. The workshop hosts represent an inter-disciplinary group of researchers seeking to develop a community of practice on evidence syntheses on gender-based violence, with a view to strengthen the evidence base for policy and practice. The community of practice developed from discussion at the European Conference on Domestic Violence in Reykjavik, Iceland 2023. We share an interest in the topic of gender-based violence and methodological challenges in evidence syntheses including ethics, researcher wellbeing, involvement of people with lived experience, and epistemological questions about knowledge production in wider unequal systems. We came together to share ideas, solve problems, and reduce duplication of work. After brief introductions, the speakers from different disciplines will pose a key challenge encountered during their experience of conducting systematic reviews on different types of gender-based violence. The speakers will facilitate three breakout groups which participants will rotate across akin to a world cafe format. Small group activities will include creative approaches to promote inclusive and productive discussions including techniques such as creative mapping (visualising different perspectives and their relationships) and cards on the table (prompt cards addressing situations/ challenges associated with an element of evidence syntheses). Participatory activities will enable co-production of shared knowledge and solutions that can inform a practical guide for conducting evidence syntheses on gender-based violence across different disciplines. The workshop will conclude with brainstorming next step for the community of practice. Participants will have an opportunity to join the community of practice.
