Channel choice for sustainable log-based dried shiitake mushrooms production: Insights from producers and wholesalers in a GIAHS region of Japan

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: To understand the sustainability of shiitake production as a traditional agroforestry system, we focused on the shiitake (Lentinus edodes) value chain. We conducted a descriptive analysis of the reasons for choosing distribution channels. Through semi structured interviews with 17 producers and wholesalers, we examine the social sustainability and diversification strategies of these channels. Log-cultivated shiitake mushrooms are typically grown in forested areas using broadleaf trees such as sawtooth oak (Quercus acutissima), positioning this study a unique empirical investigation of the socioeconomic aspects of small-scale agroforestry, bridging logs and food productions. We investigated the distribution channels of log-cultivated dried shiitake mushrooms in Oita Prefecture, Japan, a region designated by the FAO as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) site. Log-cultivated production was recognized as an integral part of the GIAHS for maintaining the cultural landscape. Overall, the producers' cooperative, Oita Shiitake Agricultural Cooperative (OSK), was highly preferred because of its convenience, reliability, and pricing. Both producers and wholesalers supported the OSK as a central distribution channel. Despite channels offering higher unit prices, many producers continue to use the OSK because of long-standing relationships and initial support during business establishment, suggesting a potential path dependency. Private markets and individual transactions rely on personal networks, whereas direct sales and online channels face barriers such as ICT skills and logistics, indicating challenges in maintaining diverse and resilient distribution channels.
