Streaming, Screens and Social Media: Digimodernism in Contemporary Indian Cinema and Pop Culture
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This study examines the emergence and manifestation of digimodernism in contemporary Indian cinema and pop culture, analysing how digital technologies, streaming platforms, and social media have fundamentally transformed creative production, distribution, and consumption patterns. Drawing upon Alan Kirby's theoretical framework of digimodernism, this study investigates how Indian filmmakers, content creators, and audiences navigate the intersection of traditional cinematic practices and digital imperatives. The analysis reveals that Indian pop culture has developed a distinctive digimodernist vocabulary that simultaneously embraces global digital trends while retaining culturally specific narratives and aesthetic sensibilities. Through examination of streaming platform original content, social media-driven film marketing, and participatory fan cultures, the study argues that digimodernism in India represents not merely technological adoption but a fundamental reimagining of the relationship between creators, texts, and audiences in the digital age.
