English as a Catalyst in Multilingualism
Year: 2026
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: This qualitative study investigates the effect of advanced level of English on multilingual learners' motivation, self-efficacy, use of language learning strategies, and success in learning additional languages. The study collected data through an open-ended questions form and a paired interview. The participants of the study included 50 first-year students enrolled in the Department of Translation and Interpreting and two foreign language instructors. Data were subjected to content analysis and the results indicated that both students and instructors consistently identified English as a facilitating factor in multilingual learning. Advanced level of English contributes to positive self-efficacy and enhanced linguistic awareness. However, some students also reported instances of linguistic interference and overreliance on English sometimes affecting their self-efficacy beliefs and motivation.
