Artificial Intelligence and Sustainable Tourism: A Bibliometric Analysis of Research Trends and Future Perspectives
Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly shaping sustainable tourism. We conduct a bibliometric review that combines classical mapping (VOSviewer) with AI-assisted classification (Dimensions AI). An initial dimensions full-text query for “AI” AND “tourism” (2013–2025) returned 275,529 records; our core analysis focuses on peer-reviewed journal articles and conference proceedings in English with complete metadata (n = [înlocuiește cu N după deduplicare]). We map thematic clusters, disciplinary contributions (ANZSRC), and alignment with the UN SDGs via Dimensions’ tagging. Results confirm the post-2020 surge and a multidisciplinary structure spanning management/tourism, computing, and environmental sciences. Beyond volume trends, we identify five stable clusters (geo-environmental monitoring; adoption/behavior; AI tech & digital twins; health/COVID; sustainability & economics), bridging authors (e.g., Rob Law, Ulrike Gretzel), and underexplored SDGs (5, 17). Methodologically, our contribution is a replicable workflow that integrates database exports with SDG-aware tagging – complementary to classical SLRs – rather than a new algorithm. The study offers policy-relevant mapping of where AI in tourism already supports sustainability – and where gaps remain.
