The real world of accessibility: challenges in digital publishing at an academic publisher

Type: article
Abstract: With advances in legislation surrounding accessibility in publishing, and because it is the right thing to do, publishers must consider how to change their workflows to prioritize accessibility.Academic publishers, whose mandates often include keeping their work in print and available for as long as possible, should be especially concerned with accessibility work. This report is based off of my work on accessibility at McGill-Queen's University Press (MQUP).In the first part, I discuss print disabilities, accessibility legislation, and the state of accessibility at MQUP before I arrived. The second and third parts discuss particular concerns in making accessible EPUBs of scholarly works, the challenges I faced making accessible EPUBs, and proposed solutions for improving accessible workflows in academic publishing.
