Dissociation between metabolic improvements and mitochondrial transcriptional changes following exercise training in women with polycystic ovary syndrome

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a prevalent endocrine disorder linked to metabolic dysfunction. Our transcriptomic and epigenetic study revealed that the whole body metabolic benefits of high-intensity interval training in PCOS occur independently of mitochondrial-associated gene expression in skeletal muscle and subcutaneous adipose tissue. These findings support that women with PCOS and insulin resistance may have impaired transcriptional mitochondrial adaptations to exercise, with metabolic improvements likely relying on nonmitochondrial pathways.
