Innovation and South Africa’s cultural and creative industries: the evidence gap

Abstract: There is an urgent need for a comprehensive, national innovation measurement framework for the CCI, encompassing surveys of formal businesses, households, informal businesses, public entities and non-profit organisations, which are equally important actors in the ecosystem. This will create a richer cross-sectional view of innovation to inform South Africa’s unique policy mix for the ACH dispensation. The Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (DSAC) and the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) should jointly pursue this research agenda.
