Abstract: In this issue, Yan et al. show that mitochondrial targeting signals (presequences) vary widely in import strength. Using the quantitative MitoLuc and PotLuc assays, they dissect multiple parameters of protein import and reveal how presequence features influence mitochondrial targeting efficiency and stress sensitivity.
