Abstract: The article examines the most significant publications on hypnosis in Russia from 1886 to 1929. It was found that during this period hypnosis is gradually transformed from a mystical force into a fairly specific method of medicine, which is used for healing purposes. It is worth noting that in all these sources, the main and only therapeutic method is the method of direct suggestions. Nevertheless, there is already a classification of the depth of trance, and hypnotic phenomena that occur in various depths of trance have been analyzed. The therapeutic methods that were used in the specified period of time are being analyzed. Most authors adhere to the approach in which it is necessary to conduct several sessions of suggestion. It is worth noting that in the specified period of time there was no such term as "psychosomatics", and yet many doctors who mastered hypnosis could eliminate diseases or reduce their effect. Some authors note that a person's stay in a hypnotic state is therapeutic in itself, and the strength of the operator's influence on the hypnotized person is stronger the deeper the state of hypnosis in the patient.
