Worldwide breast cancer initiatives

Year: 2026
Type: book-chapter
Abstract: The Global Breast Cancer Initiative (GBCI), the Lancet Breast Cancer Commission and the NGO City Cancer Challenge (C/Can) each aim to improve breast cancer care globally by addressing existing disparities and promoting equity. The GBCI, launched by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2021, identifies three pillars (early detection, prompt diagnosis, treatment to completion) based on a universal breast cancer pathway through which improved breast cancer outcomes have already been achieved in successful high-income countries. Through interdisciplinary collaboration, these initiatives identify key opportunities for change and outline measurable indicators of progress, including but not limited to GBCI’s key performance indicators (KPIs). The Lancet Commission, published in 2024, defines six themes encompassing prevention strategies, personalized treatment approaches, management of metastatic disease, global collaboration to tackle inequities, recognition of hidden costs, and empowerment through effective communication. Working at the level of cities, C/Can has established a partnership with WHO to establish methods for implementing the GBCI framework in selected cities to establish functional models that can be adapted in other limited resource settings at the city, country, and global levels. By advocating for evidence-based interventions and prioritizing patient empowerment, the Commission aims to drive real change and improve outcomes for breast cancer patients worldwide.
