A Stability Model of System Performance under Complexity and Uncertainty

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Understanding how complex systems generate and sustain performance remains a central challenge across disciplines. Existing approaches typically address individual dimensions such as structure, uncertainty, or adaptation, but lack a unified analytical structure that captures their interaction in a single model. This paper introduces the Imperium Stability Model (ISM), a unified model that represents system performance as the result of interacting amplifying and constraining factors. Specifically, the model integrates value-generating components, including operational units, reputation, synergy, and execution, with limiting factors arising from structural complexity and uncertainty within a single analytical structure. The ISM proposes that system performance follows a structural balance between these forces, and that stability is governed by nonlinear effects emerging from their interaction. By integrating perspectives from systems theory, complexity theory, information theory, and strategic management into one structure, the ISM provides a coherent analytical model for analyzing performance under complexity and uncertainty. The model is intentionally non-operational and establishes a structured analytical foundation for future theoretical and empirical work.
