Demand response for sustainable manufacturing – A prescheduled experiment on cost and CO2 reduction

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This paper investigates the potential of demand response (DR) implementation in the context of manufacturing sites to reduce electricity consumption costs and promote sustainability. The study tests the hypothesis that for such manufacturers, a predetermined, forecast-aligned approach is more viable than a dynamic one. By analyzing site consumption data and national energy data, the study examines how energy consumption can align with renewable energy generation to cut costs and lower CO 2 emissions. While the DR approach shows promise in achieving these goals, challenges such as limited production flexibility and capacity constraints highlight the need for a predetermined approach rather than a dynamic one. Overall, the study suggests that DR oriented towards renewable energy generation can generate benefits, but operational limits should be considered.
