From Physical Records to Minimal Observers

Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Abstract: Observers are typically treated as contingent entities that arise late in cosmic evolution. This paper argues the opposite: once minimal physical constraints are satisfied, the emergence of observers becomes an inevitable consequence of irreversible dynamics. The argument derives the emergence of observers from general thermodynamic and informational principles. The logical chain is: irreversibility → records → correlations → constraints → complexity → observers. The result suggests that observers are not accidental features of the universe but natural outcomes of irreversible physical processes. The analysis is independent of specific microscopic models and is compatible with thermodynamic approaches to emergent spacetime.
