Foreign Experience in the Use of Mathematical Principles for Teaching Logistics in European Universities

Abstract: The transformation of logistics into a data-driven and analytically intensive field has significantly influenced the structure and content of logistics education in European universities.Mathematical principles, including linear programming, network optimization, stochastic modeling, queuing theory, simulation methods, and multi-criteria decision analysis, have become fundamental components of logistics curricula. The integration of these tools reflects the growing complexity of supply chains, the digitalization of transport systems, and the need for evidence-based managerial decisions.European higher education institutions increasingly position logistics as an interdisciplinary domain that connects mathematics, operations research, economics, and information technologies. This article examines foreign experience in the implementation of mathematical principles in logistics education across European universities.Particular attention is given to curricular models in Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Scandinavia, where quantitative methods are embedded in bachelor's and master's programs through dedicated modules such as Operations Research, Quantitative Methods for Logistics, Supply Chain Analytics, and Transport Optimization. The analysis highlights how mathematical modeling is not taught in isolation but integrated into problem-based learning environments, case studies, digital simulations, and collaboration with industry partners. The study demonstrates that the effectiveness of logistics education depends on the systematic incorporation of mathematical thinking into professional training.European universities emphasize the development of analytical competencies, algorithmic reasoning, and the ability to interpret quantitative results in managerial contexts. The foreign experience confirms that mathematical formalization enhances students' understanding of supply chain coordination, inventory management, routing, and risk assessment. The results of
