Diurnal Microbial Entrainment Therapy: A Chronobiome-Based Hypothesis for Restoring Metabolic Homeostasis
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: We hypothesize that the scheduled, timed administration of distinct synbiotics-carefully formulated combinations of specific probiotics and prebiotics-can act as a therapeutic zeitgeber to reinforce a health-associated diurnal rhythm within the gut ecosystem.By aligning delivery with physiological peaks and troughs in intestinal bile acid concentration, this intervention seeks to promote a rhythmic microbial community structure. This optimal rhythm is characterized by robust daytime activity of butyrate-producing Firmicutes and synchronized nighttime activity of propionate and acetate-producing Bacteroidetes. The restoration of this phasic activity is predicted to rebuild the beneficial cyclicity of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production, thereby recalibrating host metabolic signaling, enhancing gut barrier integrity, and dampening systemic inflammation.
