Understanding the Role of Inflammation in Cardiovascular Disease

Year: 2024
Type: article
Abstract: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains the leading cause of mortality worldwide, with inflammation recognized as a key contributor to its development and progression. Inflammation plays a central role in the initiation and progression of atherosclerosis, the primary underlying cause of many cardiovascular events. This article examines the role of inflammation in cardiovascular disease, focusing on the mechanisms by which inflammatory cells and cytokines influence vascular function. It explores the relationship between chronic low-grade inflammation and risk factors for CVD, such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity, as well as the impact of acute inflammatory responses in myocardial infarction and stroke. Furthermore, the article discusses potential therapeutic approaches targeting inflammation to reduce the burden of cardiovascular diseases.
