Abstract: Light electric vehicles (LEVs) offer a promising opportunity to support emission reduction efforts in the transport sector, particularly as the rising popularity of resource- and emission-intensive vehicles like SUVs continues to undermine climate goals. This paper contributes to the global conversation on the role of LEVs by quantifying their potential to replace conventional trips and reduce emissions across different regions, while also examining the key barriers that hinder their adoption. The analysis focuses on four representative countries, Germany, the United States, India, and South Africa, chosen to reflect diverse mobility contexts and needs. Theoretical maximum potentials for GHG emissions reductions differ across contexts when evaluated using context appropriate methods. However, the extent of this potential varies depending on regional factors such as trip characteristics, spatial dynamics, and the emission factors of existing transport modes. To realize this opportunity, the paper explores and compares critical barriers across countries, including cost, safety, charging infrastructure, and gender-related factors. By highlighting current conditions, the study aims to inform policymakers and stakeholders, fostering international collaboration and knowledge exchange to accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility.
