Punk pedagogy: Teaching to a different beat
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: In this interview, Lucy Robinson explains to Daniel Frost how her teaching has been shaped by punk and rave subcultures. The interview traces Robinson’s journey through academia and the changes that universities have undergone since the 1990s – the increasing importance of teaching, growing interest in histories of subcultures, and the marketisation of higher education. She encourages graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) and early career researchers (ECRs) to think more about the range of different experiences that students and teachers bring to the classroom and ways of sustaining radicalism and toxicity in contemporary higher education. Robinson describes her punkademic approach to the use of digital technologies, curriculum and assessment design, and collaboration, drawing on her own teaching practice. In embedding a collective, do-it-together attitude in her teaching practice, Robinson provides a blueprint for adopting an interdisciplinary, critically informed pedagogy.
