Coordinated optimization of speed, parking, and turns in an integrated urban traffic system
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This article presents an urban traffic control system that integrates three management strategies: speed control, parking area management, and conditional turn permissions at intersections within a single unified system, with the aim of optimizing traffic flow and reducing congestion in urban environments. Using SUMO and Python, a simulation environment is developed that dynamically adjusts speed limits, enables or disables parking zones, and conditions turns at intersections based on various input variables to prevent bottlenecks during peak demand periods. The system analyzes real-time metrics to make coordinated control decisions. The results show that the integrated control approach improves the traffic indicators considered in this research compared to traditional control scenarios and single-variable control strategies. Moreover, the study demonstrates that the coordination of speed, parking, and conditional turns improves the efficiency of urban traffic management, offering a scalable and adaptable alternative for the development of more sustainable cities.
