Deciphering the Chinese Character Pattern in Dermatological Conditions
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The “Chinese character” pattern in dermatology is a distinctive morphological arrangement resembling the angulated strokes of traditional Chinese script, observed across clinical, dermoscopic, microbiological, and histopathological settings. In dermoscopy, it is seen in acquired dermal macular hyperpigmentation and follicular Dowling–Degos disease as arcuate or branching pigment structures. In jellyfish dermatitis, it reflects nematocyst penetration and dermal injury. Corynebacterium species demonstrate a similar “Chinese letter” arrangement on Gram staining due to snapping division. In incontinentia pigmenti, pigmentation along Blaschko’s lines may adopt this pattern, while fibrous dysplasia in McCune–Albright syndrome shows comparable trabecular arrangements histologically. Pigmentary mosaicism may also exhibit such configurations. Recognition of this pattern across diverse contexts enhances diagnostic accuracy and provides insight into underlying disease processes.
