Relationship between hyperempathy and wellbeing in autism
Year: 2026
Type: preprint
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: Autistic people are frequently described in both academic and clinical discussion as experiencing low or no empathy, yet emerging evidence suggests that some experience hyperempathy, heightened emotional attunement or responsiveness to others. While empathy is typically viewed as a positive trait, hyperempathy may present unique challenges for autistic individuals, particularly in relation to their well-being. This systematic review will consider current evidence addressing the research question: What is known about the relationship between hyperempathy and well-being in autistic people?
