Type: article
Abstract: This essay traces the historical development and current state of Japanese-language education and Japan-related studies in Türkiye, highlighting their evolution over the past fifty years. It emphasizes the institutionalization of Japanese studies, key academic contributions, and persistent challenges. The essay also explores the foundation and strategic significance of the Turkish-Japanese Science and Technology University (TJU), a landmark initiative in bilateral academic cooperation. The article argues that TJU holds significant potential both for Türkiye and for the region. Emphasizing that TJU should not delay the establishment of a social sciences department, the study also argues that integrating the social sciences from the outset is essential for the university to fully realize its mission and enhance mutual understanding through interdisciplinary education and international collaboration.
