Abstract: Cistanches Herba (CH), commonly known as "desert ginseng," is a renowned edible medicinal plant valued for its potential to promote longevity and vitality. A long usage history suggests that CH has various clinical therapeutic effects. In recent years, many studies have shown that the therapeutic effects of CH are closely related to its ability to regulate the gut microbiota. However, these studies remain fragmented and lack a comprehensive overview of how CH regulates the gut microbiota to improve health. At the same time, the range of CH products is growing, with its presence expanding in international markets. This trend underscores the need for a systematic review of both its biological effects and market potential. Therefore, this article aims to summarize current evidence on CH’s role in modulating gut microbiota and enhancing health outcomes. It also examines the existing and emerging market applications of CH, while analyzing the key challenges that hinder the development of CH products. These insights are intended to support its broader utilization in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
