Vortex Field Visualization in the Near Blade Region of a Vertical-Axis Marine Hydrokinetic Turbine
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Vertical-axis hydrokinetic turbines offer a high-power-density solution for marine renewable energy, yet their performance is heavily influenced by complex wake interactions and unsteady aerodynamics. This study utilizes time-resolved particle image velocimetry (PIV) to investigate the vortical flow fields of a tandem turbine system. By focusing on the near-blade region, we elucidate how dynamic stall and the subsequent shedding of the Leading-Edge Vortex (LEV) drive torque generation in high-solidity rotors.
