Understanding of three decade temporal dataset of mangrove distribution on shoreline expansion in Subang Northern Coastal Area, Indonesia
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Mangroves are vital ecosystems that provide ecological and economic benefits to coastal communities, especially in Indonesia, which has the largest area of mangroves. The dynamics of upstream erosion to coastal erosion have resulted in increased accretion, providing new space for mangroves to expand. Unfortunately, the temporal dynamics of coastal morphology and its relationship with mangroves have been understudied in Indonesia. Therefore, this study aims to examine the dynamics of mangrove cover in changing shoreline areas in the northern coast of Subang Regency, using Landsat remote sensing data collected over more than three decades. The Random Forest algorithm, implemented through the GEE cloud computing platform, played a role in classifying mangroves annually from 1990 to 2025, resulting in an existing mangrove area of 261 ha in 2025. This area has decreased significantly compared to 1992, reaching 639 ha (R² = 0.27 and p-value = 0.001). The silvofishery system of the Avicennia species is predominantly found in areas with anthropogenic interventions in critical coastal landscapes within the study area. The shoreline changes by approximately 46 m year-1, and accretion formed by sediment accumulation at a rate of 23 ha year-1 has been shown to result in additional mangrove cover. However, the rate of aquaculture intervention in coastal areas is not proportional to the succession of mangroves at the shoreline, which is so slow that mangroves are considered to have little impact in terms of quantity. This requires regional and national policy support in managing mangrove habitats, especially in the critical northern coast of Java, so that their ecological benefits can support the national FOLU Net Sink 2030 target and annual NDC reporting.
