Abstract: Gabon has approximately 60,000 students, including more than 4,000 scholarship holders, and an undetermined number of non-scholarship holders who are expatriates in some thirty countries on almost every continent. This article examines the drivers and challenges of this dynamic of emigration. It appears that the strong tendency towards the expatriation of Gabonese students results from the combination of expulsion factors (mistrust of local universities, universalization of scholarships) and attraction factors (diversification of cooperation grants from third States or international organizations, strategy of offensive attractiveness of foreign universities). This school emigration also raises important geopolitical (Gabon’s academic marginalization), economic (financial draining effect) and social (brain drain, educational setbacks) issues.
