Care pathway for women with breast cancer in the city of Rio de Janeiro

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: In Brazil, breast cancer is the second most common tumor in women. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic and social distancing restrictions impacted the monitoring and treatment of many health conditions by Primary Health Care (PHC) teams, which focused on treating flu-like symptoms. This study sought to understand the care provided to women with breast cancer during the pandemic. This was a qualitative and exploratory study, whose primary data collection was carried out through semi-structured interviews with two women diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021, registered at a family clinic in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Secondary data collection was carried out through documentary analysis of electronic medical records and the State and National Regulation systems. The results showed gaps in the comprehensive care of women with breast cancer as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, both in primary care and in hospitals, with loss of follow-up by the primary care team. Strategies for maintaining continuity of care in times of crisis, especially in the monitoring and treatment of serious clinical and social situations, still need to be developed, but some clues could be identified.
