Review of the CHA₂DS₂-VASc Score

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The CHA₂DS₂-VASc score is a validated clinical tool for estimating the annual risk of thromboembolic and ischemic stroke in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation. It was developed among patients not taking anticoagulation. It refines the earlier CHADS₂ score by incorporating additional risk factors to identify low-risk patients who may not require anticoagulation. The score guides shared decision-making regarding oral anticoagulation.
