Adjunctive Cannabidiol for Pharmaco-Resistant Lennox–Gastaut Syndrome in an Adult with Learning Disability

Year: 2026
Type: article
Study design: Case Report
Abstract: Lennox–Gastaut Syndrome (LGS) is an epilepsy syndrome with childhood onset that persists into adulthood. LGS is characterised by multiple seizure types, cognitive impairment, and behavioural presentations. Around 33% of individuals have normal intellect prior to seizure onset, but subsequent diagnosis of intellectual disability is evident in most individuals. Most individuals experience treatment-resistant seizures and significant functional impairments for the duration of life. Epidyolex (cannabidiol) is a novel, licensed adjunctive therapy for seizures associated with LGS and has orphan drug status. This case study presents the outcomes from a 36-year-old woman with pharmaco-resistant LGS, intellectual disability, and non-verbal communication following introduction of Epidyolex. Drawing upon current evidence and UK clinical guidance, the report explores pharmacological strategies, holistic interventions, and long-term management considerations. The case highlights the importance of multidisciplinary coordination, personalized care planning, and regular treatment evaluation in improving outcomes for adults living with complex epilepsy syndromes.
