Women’s entrepreneurship in Thailand: navigating gendered demands, constraints, and strategic choices
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Women’s entrepreneurship plays an important role in economic resilience, social well-being, and community development in Thailand, yet women operate within gendered entrepreneurial ecosystems shaped by financial exclusion, institutional barriers, and persistent social norms. This study examines how Thai women entrepreneurs navigate these conditions using Stewart’s Demand–Constraint–Choice (DCC) framework as an interpretive lens. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with 20 women entrepreneurs across diverse sectors, the research employs reflexive thematic analysis to identify six key themes related to motivation, constraints, role balancing, networks, resilience, and gender norms. The findings show that entrepreneurial role demands are closely linked to caregiving responsibilities and expectations surrounding family welfare, while role constraints arise from gendered financial systems, regulatory complexity, and entrenched institutional norms. Despite these challenges, women adopt adaptive strategies, including mobilizing community resources, using hybrid digital–traditional business practices, and pursuing incremental innovation to sustain their ventures. The study’s primary contribution is empirical and contextual, providing insight into how women entrepreneurs negotiate gendered demands, structural constraints, and strategic choices within Thailand’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. Policy implications emphasize the need for gender-responsive financing, simplified regulatory procedures, digital inclusion, and stronger community-based support mechanisms to foster more inclusive and sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems.
