Automated aerobic fitness measurement using smartphone image analysis
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Aerobic fitness commonly expressed as maximal oxygen consumption ( V O ˙ 2 max ), is a powerful predictor of cardiovascular health, endurance performance, and all-cause mortality. However, traditional methods for measuring V O ˙ 2 max require indirect calorimetry, specialized personnel, and costly laboratory equipment, making routine assessment inaccessible to most individuals. This software-based invention enables individuals to self-assess V O ˙ 2 max using a smartphone or tablet. The system estimates aerobic fitness by combining digital body composition measures obtained from a single anterior 2-dimensional image with timed performance data from a standardized walk/run test over a fixed distance. V O ˙ 2 max is reported relative to both body mass and fat-free mass, providing users with unique insights into their functional capacity and training status. This innovation has broad application in clinical, sport performance, and consumer health settings, supporting telemedicine, mHealth, and virtual coaching. It aligns with the growing digital health market and addresses the need for accessible, evidence-based fitness tracking tools. While limitations include the need for ambulation, a global positioning system (GPS)-enabled device, and a flat testing surface, the system provides a convenient, cost-effective, and scalable alternative to traditional fitness assessments.
