A Review on Various Concepts of Carbon Sequestration

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The fundamental ideas, processes, and techniques of carbon sequestration a crucial tactic for mitigating climate change are examined in this paper. To attain a net-zero emission balance, it looks at how carbon moves from the atmosphere into long-lived pools. The study divides carbon sequestration into four main categories: geological (saline aquifers and depleted oil/gas reservoirs), oceanic (deep-sea storage and blue carbon), terrestrial (forests and agroforestry) and technological [Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Direct Air Capture (DAC)]. It also describes several quantification techniques, from sophisticated remote sensing (RS), geographic information systems (GIS), and LiDAR-based modelling to field-based biomass measurements and soil samples. A major environmental concern is global warming, which is caused by the sharp rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) from 280 parts per million in 1850 to over 420 parts per million in 2023. Since 1975, the yearly global temperature has increased by about 0.158 °C per ten years due to an increase in greenhouse gases (GHGs). This has caused extreme weather events, ecosystem changes, and rising sea levels.
