Modified wound negative pressure suction technology combined with silver nanoparticle dressings in elderly chronic wound care

Abstract: • Wound preparation and debridement: The wound was thoroughly disinfected, debrided, and all necrotic and infected tissue was removed to establish a clean wound bed. • Negative pressure device assembly and application: A nano-silver antimicrobial dressing was trimmed to fit the wound size, wrapped around a suction catheter with pre-made side holes, and placed onto the wound bed. The assembly was then sealed with a semi-permeable film dressing to ensure airtightness, and negative pressure (125∼450 mmHg) was applied until visible collapse of the dressing was observed. • Therapy maintenance and management: Continuous negative pressure therapy was maintained for 5∼7 days, with monitoring of dressing integrity and drainage. The drainage canister was replaced when two-thirds full, dressings were changed every 4∼7 days, and wound healing progress was measured and documented at each change. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of modified wound negative pressure suction technology combined with nano-silver dressings in the management and care of chronic wounds in elderly patients. 101 elderly patients with chronic wounds admitted to hospital between January 2023 and December 2023 were selected as research subjects. Patients were divided into control (50 cases: routine dressing changes) and treated groups (51 cases: modified wound negative pressure suction technology combined with nano-silver dressings). The wound bed score (WBS) and visual analogue score (VAS) of each group at different time points were collected, as well as relevant wound characteristics data, to compare therapeutic effects. Both groups completed the expected treatment and follow-up period, and there were no significant differences in the baseline data before treatment ( P > 0.05). Before treatment, the WBS score of the treated group (6.53±2.75) was lower than that of the control group (8.06±2.05), and the VAS score of the treated group (4.55±2.38) was higher than that of the control group (3.42±0.79), albeit not statistically significant ( P > 0.05). After the stipulated treatment period, the WBS score of the treated group (11.94±2.03) was significantly higher than that of the control group (10.84±1.91, P < 0.001, and the VAS score of the treated group (1.92±0.75) was significantly lower than that of the control group (0.75±0.72, P < 0.001. The number of dressing changes, exudate reduction time, pain onset time, hospital stay, and dressing satisfaction of the treated group were significantly better than those of the control group ( P < 0.5). In addition, the positive rate of bacteria was decreased, the wound healing rate was increased, and the healing time was shortened ( P < 0.05). Modified wound negative pressure suction technology combined with nano-silver dressings is effective for the treatment of elderly chronic wounds.
