Encapsulation technologies as key enablers of climate-resilient agriculture

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Encapsulation technologies as key enablers of climate-resilient agriculture This article explores how encapsulation technologies can promote more resilient agricultural practices in the face of climate challenges. Encapsulation technology, first described by Geen and Schleider in U.S. Patent No. 2,730,457 (1956), has evolved into a highly interdisciplinary field with applications spanning pharmaceuticals, food science, cosmetics, and agriculture. In recent years, microencapsulation has become particularly relevant to agronomy, enabling the controlled delivery of active compounds and supporting more sustainable production systems. Advances in encapsulation methods and materials have made this technology a promising tool to improve nutrient-use efficiency, protect microbial inoculants, and reduce environmental impacts.
