Dopaminergic modulation of low- and high-spontaneous rate type I auditory nerve fiber activity
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Efferent lateral olivocochlear fibers originating in the brainstem and projecting into the mammalian cochlea inhibit auditory nerve fiber activity via dopaminergic inputs. The study here shows that dopamine affects all subtypes of auditory nerve fibers, with low and high spontaneous rates, via direct stimulation of a D1-like receptor. Data do not support an effect of D2-like receptors on ANF firing rate.
