An improved correlation law of the extinction coefficient for open-cell strut-based foams in view of volumetric solar absorber design
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Highlights-A new analytical extinction law for architected porous media is derived from probabilistic arguments rather than empirical fitting. -The proposed law captures the correct asymptotic behavior as porosity decreases and remains valid over a wide porosity range. -A stochastic 3D geometry generator and a Monte Carlo ray-tracing tool were developed to compute extinction coefficients numerically. -The new correlation shows excellent agreement with Monte Carlo results, with less than 2% mean error across all tested-This formulation provides a robust basis for homogenized modeling of next-generation volumetric solar absorbers.
