Représentations sociolinguistiques du FLE et identité professionnelle des enseignantes-stagiaires dites «non-natives»
Year: 2025
Type: dissertation
Abstract: This master’s thesis, conducted at a university center for FFL in a major French city, examines the extent to which the sociolinguistic representations of students, “non-native” trainee teachers and permanent teachers of the center influence the construction of the professional identity of the “non-native” trainee teachers. To address this question, individual semi-structured interviews are carried out with the members of the center. The interviews reveal the prevalence of two dominant ideals: the “native” speaker ideal and the Standard Parisian French ideal. These exogeneous factors influence the “non-native” trainee teachers’ professional identity, they translate into linguistic insecurity experimented by the “non-native” trainee teachers, experiences of employment discrimination and remarks from others. Several endogenous factors also influence the “non-native” trainee teachers’ professional identity, including coursework in language didactics offered through the master’s program, the French language certifications they pursue and their own sociolinguistic representations of French.
