Correlates of left ventricular mass and geometry in elderly males with established cardiovascular disease: An observational study

Abstract: ABSTRACT Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a common cardiac adaptation observed in older adults. While aging is associated with its occurrence, LVH is also linked to various factors, particularly in individuals with cardiovascular disease (CVD). This study explored the associations of left ventricular mass (LVM) and geometry in elderly males with CVD. Data were analyzed from 39 male patients (median age: 72 years) with established CVD. Echocardiography showed elevated LVM indexed for height 2.7 (LVMi) and a predominantly concentric left ventricular geometry, assessed through relative wall thickness (RWT). Significant correlations were identified between LVMi and systolic blood pressure, pulse pressure, body mass index, and exercise capacity. RWT was associated with left ventricular ejection fraction, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, heart failure history, and statin therapy. No significant relationships were observed between age and LVMi or RWT. These findings highlight the importance of routine assessment of LVM, geometry, and related factors to support comprehensive risk stratification and personalized care approaches for older adults with CVD.
