High-fidelity Virtual Modeling Framework for Outdoor UWB Localization via Real-world Measurements

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: This study proposes a high-fidelity virtual modeling framework for outdoor ultra-wideband (UWB) systems to enable realistic localization performance evaluation. Conventional UWB models often rely on simplified path-loss assumptions, limited multipath representation, and insufficient consideration of antenna orientation. To address these limitations, the proposed framework incorporates three key features. First, it generates virtual ranging and received signal strength (RSS) measurements that reflect distance- and height-dependent outdoor propagation characteristics using Gaussian statistical modeling based on static field measurements. Second, it reconstructs multipath distortion and orientation-induced signal degradation by integrating dynamic field measurements with angle-dependent RSS thresholds, enabling realistic replication of synchronization failures and attenuation patterns. Third, it supports scalable and repeatable virtual testing through realistic synthetic dataset generation, reducing dependence on extensive field trials while enabling systematic evaluation across diverse outdoor conditions. Quantitative validation confirms that the framework accurately reproduces ranging offsets, RSS attenuation trends, reception failures, and orientation-related degradation patterns with high fidelity to real measurements. By providing realistic virtual testing capabilities beyond conventional approaches, this framework establishes a reliable foundation for UWB-based outdoor positioning research and offers significant potential for the design, analysis, and optimization of real-time outdoor localization systems.
