Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: One such growing trend among young people today is the rising consumption of energy drinks—a phenomenon that has drawn widespread attention and concern from health professionals, educators, and parents alike. The alarming surge in inexpensive energy drink consumption among Indian schoolchildren is a grave public health crisis demanding immediate national action. Priced at just Rs 10-20, these beverages have permeated students’ daily lives, replacing healthier alternatives and posing severe, long-term risks to their physical and mental well-being. This trend threatens to burden an entire generation with chronic conditions like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular ailments. The adverse effects are, in many respects, as severe as those of tobacco, necessitating stringent restrictions akin to those already imposed on tobacco products in educational settings.According to the World Health Organization (WHO), this period spans the ages of 10 to 19 years and is essential for laying the foundation oflifelong health and well-being. During this time, adolescents undergo rapid changesand face new challenges, making them more vulnerable to external influences, including dietary habits and lifestyle choices.
