Is Aquinas’s Approach to predestination Biblical? Scriptural Sources of Thomistic Interpretation of Predestination
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The article examines the biblical foundations of Thomas Aquinas’s doctrine of predestination, showing that his approach cannot be reduced to a purely philosophical or speculative framework. Aquinas’s theology of predestination is deeply rooted in Scripture, particularly in Pauline texts such as Romans 8–9 and Ephesians 1, and is inseparable from Christology and the doctrine of grace. By analyzing his biblical commentaries, the study demonstrates that predestination in Aquinas is not primarily about divine arbitrariness but about the gratuity of God’s love and its Christocentric realization. The novelty of this contribution lies in highlighting how biblical Aquinas’s notion of predestination truly reconfigures debates often detached from Scripture.
