Traineeships in vocational education: what the laws of Brazil and Portugal tell us
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: The objective of this article is to analyze comparatively the Brazilian and Portuguese legislations that regulate internship in vocational education. It adopts a qualitative approach of documentary research, with analysis of current laws, structured in ten analytical categories and systematized in summary framework. The results show that Portugal guarantees universal remuneration to trainees through public funding, while Brazil restricts this right to non-compulsory internships. However, Brazilian law further details the rights of students and integrates the internship into the pedagogical project of the course. Although both recognize the internship as a relevant stage of transition to work, limits to its consolidation as an emancipatory pedagogical practice persist. It is concluded that there are divergences and convergences between the two cases, and that the strengthening of the role of educational institutions and pedagogical supervision is central for the internship to effectively contribute to integral training. https://doi.org/10.21723/riaee.v21i00.2025002
