PM² : From Ideation to Scale

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Startups are commonly portrayed as informal, agile, and structure-averse organizations. While this characterization holds in early stages, it becomes increasingly inaccurate as startups grow, scale operations, and interact with complex ecosystems of investors, partners, regulators, and customers. Yet, project management and governance frameworks are often adopted either too late, too rigidly, or without consideration for the startup’s evolving nature. This article proposes a decision-support perspective that conceptualizes the startup lifecycle—from ideation to commercial expansion—as a single evolving macro-project. Building on this assumption, it offers a structured comparative analysis of four major project management references (PMBOK®, PRINCE2®, ISO 21502, and PM²) across distinct lifecycle phases. Rather than ranking methodologies by “performance,” the analysis focuses on structural gaps that emerge when each framework is used as a primary reference throughout the lifecycle. The article concludes with a practical cartography that supports informed, context-aware governance choices for startups, SMEs, NGOs, and innovation-driven organizations seeking operational pragmatism without premature bureaucratization.
