Year: 2026
Type: dissertation
Abstract: Although the wood remanufacturing sector plays an important role in promoting circular economy practices in Europe, the academic and industrial attention remains relatively underexplored. This study provides details analysis about current condition of wood manufacturing sector, sustainable driven developments and major challenges related to wood remanufacturing in European context with a particular focus on Finland using secondary data and existing literature. Despites the considerable efforts taken by European union and Finnish national levels to promote circular economy policies and bioeconomy strategies, industrial scale wood remanufacturing has not achieved substantial growth. Most of sectoral initiatives remain in the research or pilot project stages. However, several reusing or repurposing initiatives have demonstrated the potential to enhance remanufacturing processes. Wood remanufacturing sector faces multiple technical, operational, business, market, policy and institutional barriers that hinder industrial adoption of wood remanufacturing. The key barriers include economic competition against virgin wood, limited consumer demand, inconsistency in quality of reclaimed wood, policy and regulatory gaps and lack of incentives. The findings of the study emphasis the importance of integrated strategies that combine technological innovation, supportive policy framework, market developments and knowledge sharing to strengthen economically viable, industrial-scale wood remanufacturing. This study contributes to the existing literature, providing practical insights to sectoral stakeholders, policy makers and academic researchers by comprehensively analysing the current condition of the wood manufacturing sector, sustainable-driven initiatives taken and major challenges that hinder wood-based industrial developments in the context of Europe, with the special focus on Finland.
