How Far Is Too Far? Travel Planning Burdens in Autism Families

Year: 2026
Type: conference-paper
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This study examines how the burden of planning and risk management influences travel distance and destination choice among families with a child on the autism spectrum. Survey data from Utah-based parents indicate that higher planning burden is associated with a preference for familiar, closer-to-home destinations and shorter travel distances. Despite these constraints, families report that travel remains highly valuable for bonding, fostering a sense of normalcy, and supporting developmental growth.
