Herbal Management of Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in Cattle

Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD), caused by the Capripoxvirus, is an emerging trans boundary viral disease of cattle resulting in nodules, fever, lymphadenopathy, reduced milk production, infertility, and socioeconomic losses. With no specific antiviral drugs available, supportive care and vaccination remain key strategies. In many regions—particularly rural, low-resource settings—farmers utilize herbal remedies as adjunct or alternative therapy. This paper reviews the scientific basis, preparation methods, pharmacological actions, and clinical outcomes of key herbal treatments used for LSD, including Azadirachta indica (Neem), Aloe vera, and Curcuma longa (Turmeric). Field observations across Asia and Africa suggest that these botanicals enhance wound healing, reduce inflammation, prevent secondary bacterial infections, and improve recovery time. However, evidence is largely observational, and controlled clinical trials are sparse. This paper highlights the potential of herbal management in LSD control while emphasizing the need for standardized formulations and integrated veterinary supervision.
