Abstract: Very low birth weight (VLBW, <1500 g birthweight) infants are at substantially increased risk of neonatal sepsis. The reported incidence of early-onset sepsis (EOS) in this population is ~1–2%, and that of late-onset sepsis (LOS) ranges from 9 to 20%, markedly higher than the ~0.05–0.1% incidence observed in term infants. 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 VLBW infants also account for the majority of sepsis-related deaths in neonates, with a mortality rate as high as 18% among infants with culture-confirmed sepsis. 8 , 9
