Abstract: Regular assessment of nutritional status represents an important step in maintaining health and improving the quality of life of older adults. In the elderly population, malnutrition is most often of multifactorial origin and arises as a result of physiological, pathophysiological, social, and psychological factors. The aim of this review paper was to highlight, based on recent literature, the importance of regular assessment of nutritional status in the geriatric population. In practice, many healthcare professionals do not regularly conduct nutritional screening and assessment, which results in numerous nutritional problems, particularly malnutrition, often remaining unrecognized or being misdiagnosed. Diagnostic procedures used to assess the nutritional status of older adults include dietary, functional, and biochemical assessments, anthropometric measurements, and clinical examination. Routine examinations and nutritional status assessments are recommended to be conducted more frequently in frail older adults.
