A Comparison of Preeclampsia Screening Using Clinical Risk Factors and the Fetal Medicine Foundation Algorithm
Year: 2026
Type: article
Abstract: Aspirin can prevent most preterm preeclampsia in high-risk women. The risk can be estimated either by considering clinical factors or by using the Fetal Medicine Foundation (FMF) algorithm, which considers placental growth factor with blood pressure and other markers. Among nulliparous women, a low FMF risk is associated with low incidences of preeclampsia (<2.5%) and preterm preeclampsia (<0.5%), and a high FMF risk is associated with high incidences of preeclampsia (>6%) and preterm preeclampsia (>1.5%; P < 0.001), regardless of clinical risk factors. Where available, the FMF algorithm including placental growth factor should be the only tool used for preeclampsia screening.
